“Our strength lies in the combination of design quality, personal service and technical rigour,” he responded. “We do not impose a predetermined architectural style. Instead, the client, site, orientation, views, landscape and surrounding architecture shape the design.
“Many of our projects involve challenging sites or sensitive planning contexts. At Partickhill Road, for example, a steep Conservation Area site led to an ‘upside-down’ house, placing the main living spaces at entrance level to maximise daylight and views across Glasgow.
“Turning constraints into positive design decisions is fundamental to our work.”
This ability to respond thoughtfully to each site also informs the lasting value of the practice’s projects. George explained how the work is intended to benefit not only individual clients, but also the wider built environment.
“Good architecture should add value long after a project is completed. For our residential clients, that means better natural light, stronger connections to gardens and views, more intuitive layouts, and homes that can adapt to changing family life.
“We also recognise our responsibility to the wider built environment. Whether working with a sandstone villa or introducing a contemporary building into a Conservation Area, we aim to create architecture that contributes positively to its surroundings.
“Trust comes from listening deeply, communicating clearly, and remaining committed to the project from beginning to end.”
Sustainability is another important part of this approach, with environmental considerations embedded into the design process from the outset.
“Orientation, natural light, thermal performance, material selection and the relationship between building and landscape are considered from the outset,” said George.
“At another recent project – Rhu, the house steps naturally down its steep site and incorporates high-performance glazing, a highly insulated envelope and green roofs. However, we are equally passionate about adapting existing buildings. Projects such as Partickhill Avenue and Buchanan Drive show how established homes can be transformed for contemporary family life while retaining their original character and value.”
